What an integral piece of my childhood was The Berenstain Bears. Unfortunately, we’ve lost half of the collective mind that went into creating one of the greatest series of children’s books ever created, in Jan Berenstain.
Jan survived her husband Stan’s death in 2005 at the age of 82, after which, many of her friends say she was never quite the old Jan. Six years later, we’ve now suffered the loss of both creators of one of the most beloved children’s series of all time.
Jan was also the author of many other books such as After the Dinosaurs, Mr. Dirty and Mrs. Clean, Flipsville-Squaresville, and many others.
Jan is survived by her son Micheal (born in 1951) who was the illustrator of many of Stan and Jan’s books, including The Berenstain Bears series.
Jan’s death is a great loss to not only children everywhere, but to the literary community. She will be sorely missed.
To learn more about Jan Berenstain, pick up her 2002 autobiography Down a Sunny Dirt Road, which I’m sure will be displayed at all Barnes & Noble locations in the coming week.
