Quick Note: Avengers Pulls Ahead to Number 3 in Both Domestic and Worldwide Dollars

I posted last night that The Avengers is still smashing records in its fifth weekend at the box office.  Today, Marvel’s runaway hit managed not only to pull ahead of Dark Knight domestically, as was predicted, with $538,116,000 domestic, but also pulled ahead of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in worldwide sales, with $1,331,300,000.  When I posted last night’s Avengers box office update, I wasn’t sure if it would beat out Harry Potter in worldwide sales, but my skepticism was fruitless, it would appear.

Congrats to everyone who worked on this fantastic movie.  But you do realize, you are really going to have to step up your A-game for any movies that follow, including 2013’s Iron Man 3 and 2014’s Thor 2.

Box Office News: Hulk Still Smashing Records

If you can believe it, Marvel’s The Avengers is still breaking records.  The May box office numbers are in, and while May wasn’t that great of a month for the box office overall, Marvel’s The Avengers takes no fault in that.  In fact, the movie is responsible solely for slightly over 52% of the total box office gains in the month of May.  That’s right.  One movie accounted for more than half the total box office gains in one month.

The actual numbers show The Avengers is still breaking records.  As previously reported, The Avengers broke an all-time opening weekend figure with over $200 million, smashing any and all records throughout history.  The Avengers, in its second weekend, broke a new record with just over $103 million.  That’s not all.  The Avengers came in second place with its third and fourth weekends, bringing in $55 million in its third weekend, and $35 million in its fourth.  As it stands right now, the film has brought in $532.5 million domestic, which is a fourth place stronghold (overall box office gross US) just behind Dark Knight, which it is estimated will be usurped by day’s end Saturday.  It should also be noted that aside from its domestic purse, its overseas dollars have also soared to $790.2 million, bringing its grand total to $1,322.7 million, where it currently sits in fourth place in worldwide dollars, behind Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows ($1,328.1 million)

The Avengers, should it maintain this type of momentum, could very well leap to the top all time domestic box office purse by the end of its theatrical run, beating out both Titanic (2) and Avatar (1).  Currently sitting at $532.5 million, should my math serve me well, it need only make another $228 million to make it to the top of the list, which may be doable in the next couple of months, should they aim for a Christmas DVD/Blu Ray release.

Some Assembly Required: Avengers Box Set Available for Pre-Order!

Yes, you read that properly.  If you’re like me, you’ve held off buying the Avengers build-up movies, waiting for the gigantic box set that would surely have been made after The Avengers comes out on DVD.  Well, it quite possibly may have been worth the wait.  Marvel.com is currently taking pre-orders for The Avengers box set, including, of course, The Avengers, Iron Man, Iron Man II, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger.  The set is ten discs, with a bonus disk rather vaguely described on the Marvel website..

You can place your orders here at Marvel.com

Keep in mind this is a limited edition box set, so collectors beware.  These will sell out, and most likely before the release.

$200.3 million. Your Move, Batman!

Forgive the lack of a comma in the last line, and just enjoy it.  Although, it’s hard to see two franchises I love going head-to-head.  Especially when it’s pretty clear which one is going to win.  Sorry, Batman.  DC holds not a candle to Marvel + Joss Whedon.

Hulk-Smashing Records for Marvel’s The Avengers

.

Having recently broken records worldwide, Joss Whedon’s masterpiece, The Avengers, has broken all box office records here in the United States.  From May 4-6 The Avengers brought in $200.3 million for Marvel and Disney, Hulk-smashing previous records set by The Hunger Games and Dark Knight.  It’s also the biggest opening weekend for any movie ever opening in the United States.  As of this writing, The Avengers has grossed over $600 million worldwide; and with good reason.

I’m happy to say that this will not be the end of the relationship between Marvel/Disney and Joss Whedon, as, as I’ve said in previous posts, the four-year, multiple-movie build up to The Avengers was more than worth the wait.  I don’t ever post spoilers on this blog, so I can’t go too far into detail, but if you haven’t seen this movie, do it!

My immediate reaction to the movie was also posted on here.  You can find it here

The Avengers: Properly Assembled

A more detailed review will be coming soon, I promise.  However, Nicole and I have just returned from the premier of The Avengers, and I honestly don’t have one single bad thing to say about it.  Joss Whedon outdid himself, just as I predicted he would – search through the past blogs for proof of this.

In short:

Joss Whedon managed to make a movie that has had four years worth of theatrical setup, worth four years of theatrical setup. The writing was flawless, the directing was flawless, the production was flawless, the cinematography was flawless. The action was just as over-the-top as it should have been, and I can’t tell you how many times I laughed myself to tears over the humor, even though he managed to make it funny but not corny. Three words: Thank you, Joss!

The humor was the main draw.  As I said, the movie wasn’t corny one bit, but Whedon still managed to make it a series of almost nonstop laughter.  Everything from smarter humor to slapstick was included.  I won’t spoil anything, but I will say that Hulk VS Loki was the greatest thing I’ve seen in a movie in quite a long time, if not ever.

Also, I would like to add that the casting choice in Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner was the best decision that could have been made as a replacement for Edward Norton.  Honestly, I would suggest erasing the Edward Norton Hulk movie from history, and starting over with a new Hulk story with Ruffalo.  Maybe even a remake of the Norton Hulk movie with Ruffalo and a better actress in the female role would be something I’d watch.  Well, so long as Whedon wrote that as well.

So, congratulations to Joss Whedon for two monster hits in one year, with both Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers.  And Marvel/Disney, you do realize that we won’t settle for anything less than the standard that was set by Joss in what I immediately called the perfect all-around movie as soon as we walked out of the theater.
